Classic Chocolate Cake - simple recipe

Here is a simple recipe for a classic chocolate cake.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups All-purpose Flour
  • 2 cups granulated suger
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1.5 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp espresso powder (optional)
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup brewed coffee (or hot water)
  • .5 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract

Instructions

Preparation

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pans.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and espresso powder (if using).
  • Add in the buttermilk, coffee or hot water, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
  • Note: This recipe can also be made into cupcakes by filling muffin cups 2/3 full.

Baking

  • Bake cake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes (cupcakes for 20-25 minutes), or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.

Final

  • Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Frost the cooled cakes with your favorite frosting.
