
Classic Chocolate Cake – simple recipe
Here is a simple recipe for a classic chocolate cake.
Ingredients
- 2 cups All-purpose Flour
- 2 cups granulated suger
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1.5 tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp espresso powder (optional)
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 cup brewed coffee (or hot water)
- .5 cup vegetable oil
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
Instructions
Preparation
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pans.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and espresso powder (if using).
- Add in the buttermilk, coffee or hot water, oil, eggs, and vanilla extract. Mix until just combined.
- Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans.
- Note: This recipe can also be made into cupcakes by filling muffin cups 2/3 full.
Baking
- Bake cake at 350°F for 30-35 minutes (cupcakes for 20-25 minutes), or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cakes comes out clean.
Final
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove them from the pans and transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
- Frost the cooled cakes with your favorite frosting.
